Getting Outside in NE Kansas: Trails, Lakes & Fresh Air

When the weather turns warm, Northeast Kansas is the perfect place to reconnect with nature. From scenic trails and peaceful lakes to parks made for play and exploration, the communities across Northeast Kansas offer plenty of ways to enjoy the season outdoors.



Overland Park: Long run planned or just in the mood for a scenic bike ride? The Indian Creek and Tomahawk Creek Bike and Hike Trail is an easy go-to. Spanning more than 13 miles, it winds through parks, shaded wooded areas, and stretches that make you forget you are still in the city. It works just as well for a casual walk as it does for serious miles, with plenty of chances to spot wildlife and native plants along the way.

Merriam: Fresh air called and Merriam answered. With parks, trails, open spaces, and art in unexpected places, Merriam makes it easy to spend time outside. Wander the scenic paths and lake views at Antioch Park, one of the city’s favorite gathering spots, or hop on the Turkey Creek Streamway Trail for walking, biking, and quiet moments surrounded by nature. Along the way, you’ll find public art tucked throughout the city, turning everyday routes into artistic discoveries.

Kansas City, Kansas: Kansas City, Kansas offers several parks where nature, history, and family-friendly experiences come together. Spend a relaxing afternoon near the scenic shores of Wyandotte County Lake, a peaceful escape surrounded by wooded landscapes and walking trails. Nearby, the Mr. & Mrs. F.L. Schlagle Library and Environmental Learning Center connects visitors with local wildlife and ecosystems. For sweeping city views, head to Mount Marty Park near the iconic Rosedale Memorial Arch.

Leavenworth: From disc golf to batting cages to off-leash dog runs, Leavenworth keeps visitors outside and active all season long. New pickleball and cornhole courts add even more ways to play, while biking trails at Havens Park and the splash pad at Hawthorn Park make great family stops. Cyclists can also connect with Gio’s Outdoors for gear, supplies, and weekly group rides.

Seneca: Spring Creek Golf Course is one of Northeast Kansas’ hidden gems for getting outside and enjoying fresh air, wide open skies, and scenic views. Beautifully maintained and welcoming to golfers of all skill levels, it offers a relaxing way to spend a morning or afternoon outdoors.

Topeka: Breathe in the fresh air and discover why Topeka is a go-to for outdoor escapes in Northeast Kansas. From scenic walking and biking trails to peaceful lakes and wide-open green spaces, the city offers plenty of ways to relax or stay active. Whether you’re casting a line, spotting wildlife, or simply enjoying a quiet moment under the trees, there’s something here for every pace.
