Here’s a pro-tip if visiting Kansas: Make sure you arrive hungry. From world famous barbecue to ethnic eats and steaks fit for a cowboy, there is no shortage of somewhere to chow down and fill up no matter what city you’re in. If you find yourself in the Northeast corner of the state, here are some eateries the locals love and the critics drool over!
Kansas City: Joe's Kansas City Bar-B-Que is a staple when eating your way through the city that's known for its rich, sweet sauce, low and slow cooked meat and signature burnt ends. The original gas station location has been around since 1996, and is a popular spot for lunch or dinner, where people will stop in from all over the world to try the "Z-Man." This legendary sandwich is made with smoked brisket, provolone cheese, onion rings and topped with a healthy layer of sauce. Get in line, chat with the locals and prepare your taste buds for a barbecue experience that is second to none.

Leavenworth: If you can’t escape on a tropical vacation this spring, you can at least get a taste of the islands in Leavenworth. Ava’s Island Café and Island Spice Jamaican Restaurant and Lounge are veteran-owned eateries that showcase innovative Caribbean flavors like brown stew chicken, oxtail and slow-roasted red snapper. Dave Richards, the owner of Island Spice, even sells his signature jerk sauces by the bottle, so feel free to bring the heat home to your own kitchen!

Merriam: Food lovers, get ready - Merriam’s newest dining destination, 30hop, is now open at Merriam Grand Station! This stylish and modern eatery brings bold flavor and an elevated vibe with everything from shareable appetizers and juicy burgers to fresh salads and an impressive lineup of local craft beers and cocktails. Whether you’re grabbing a bite after shopping or meeting friends for 30 hour, 30hop delivers a fresh twist on the American dining experience right here in Merriam. Jackson County: No matter where you find yourself in Jackson Co., chances are you will find some unexpected flavor right around the corner. From Mercer Que in Soldier, serving up some of the best BBQ in these parts, you are bound to find something you love for those flavor connoisseurs in your life. Hoyt has Elm Creek Beef, serving up Kansas products, local, grass-fed beef, and some of the best deli sandwiches we have ever had. For those home cooks, check out Third Eye Piper, a local veteran-owned shop full of spices, seasonings, and sauces, sure to level up your next meal. Schlaegel’s Homegrown Popcorn in Whiting can satisfy your need to snack with over 20 flavors, both sweet AND savory, you will find something to love!
Lawrence: Dig in at Biggs BBQ! Unliked traditional KC style bbq, all the meat is served with light sauce to accentuate the hickory-smoke flavor of the meat and Bigg's special dry rubs. They serve their three famous sauces are served on the side.

Topeka: Topeka, Kansas is a hidden gem for barbecue lovers, boasting a lineup of standout smokehouses that deliver bold flavors and hometown charm. Herman’s Meat & Smokehouse offers classic smoked meats and hearty sides in a cozy setting, while Hog Wild Pit Bar-B-Q is a go-to for tender brisket and pulled pork done right. Iron Rail Brewing pairs its craft beer with BBQ favorites like brisket sandwiches and mac & cheese. Locals rave about J Rocks Smoke House for its full slabs and pulled pork sandwiches, and Black Dog Bar-B-Que, tucked above the Topeka Harley-Davidson, offers burnt ends and cheesy potatoes with a side of biker vibes. For a quick bite, Smokey Dunks Food Truck delivers big flavor on the go, and Soul Fire Food Co. spices things up with fusion dishes like frybread pulled pork and the So Fuego Potato. Don’t miss Boxer Q BBQ or the well-known Dickey’s Barbecue Pit for their slow-smoked staples and homestyle sides. Whether you're passing through or planning a food-filled weekend, Topeka’s BBQ scene is sure to satisfy every craving.

Bonner Springs: There is a funky joint in Bonner Springs where classic BBQ meets classic cars! If you haven't visited yet, make plans to visit the Olde MIll Properties. Home to five locally owned food-forward favorites, the Olde Mill offers everything from BBQ to ice-cream in a cozy, cool environment. Also home to The Fuel House, a classic car country club, the vibe in the Olde Mill is enjoyable and relaxing. On the 2nd Saturday of the month, from May to October, auto aficionados turn out for Cars and Coffee from 8 a.m. to 11 a.m. Whether you are looking to try BBQ or a classic cocktail, the Old Mill Properties has something to satisfy any craving.
Miami County: Tucked away in a quiet space, Isinglass Estate and Winery offers a full onsite restaurant along with its tasting room. Diner can select from appetizers to dinners along with a full Sunday brunch. The room offers great views of the Estate and plenty of outdoor space for gatherings.
