Congratulations! You’ve officially made it past “false spring” in the Midwest and are now witnessing the real deal. The sun is out, the weather is warming up and life is blooming all around us. Northeast Kansas is filled with all kinds of ways to get moving this spring, whether you love to hike, bike or just enjoy a leisurely stroll in the great outdoors.
Leavenworth: From disc golf to batting cages to off-leash dog runs, the Leavenworth Parks & Recreation Department keeps us outside and active in spring with a host of free activities. Expanded outdoor offerings for the season include new pickleball and cornhole courts in Buffalo Bill Cody Park, biking trails added to hilly Havens Park and the splashpad that cools down pint-sized visitors (and the occasional adult) at Hawthorn Park. For those looking for new biking buddies, Gio’s Outdoors is a sports outfitter that recently opened a Leavenworth location; in addition to bikes and bike supplies, Gio’s hosts weekly group rides throughout Leavenworth County.
Lawrence: Lawrence is a haven for outdoor enthusiasts, with scenic trails perfect for biking, hiking, and exploring nature. Before you hit the paths, make a stop at Sunflower Outdoor & Bike Shop in downtown Lawrence to gear up for your adventure. Whether you need a last-minute tune-up, quality gear, or expert advice on the best local trails, their team has you covered. They even have a cafe to grab a drink or a meal. Start your journey fully equipped and ready to roll—because the right gear makes all the difference on the trail!
Kansas City: Urban Hikes Kansas City features not one but three hikes in KCK exploring significant events that helped shape our city The Strawberry Hill and downtown KCK Urban Hikes leads you from the historic Strawberry Hill neighborhood through downtown KCK, sharing the stories of the Eastern European immigrants who settled here at the turn of the 20th century, as well as those of the Wyandot People, some of our city's earliest inhabitants. The Tour of the Quindaro Ruins tells the tale of the old Quindaro Townsite, once a free port of entry on The Underground Railroad. Join in on The Rosedale Hike to see historic homes, colorful murals and the iconic Rosedale Memorial Arch. Hikes are offered on weekends and vary from month to month.
Overland Park: Prefer the scenic route? You’ll love the Indian Creek Hike and Bike Trail, which starts in Kansas City and continues for more than 25 miles, including through the heart of Overland Park. The asphalt paths are ideal for hiking, biking and skating – and because they’re mostly shaded, the trail is a great option even during the hot summer months.

Jackson County: Jackson County is full of wonderful parks, trails, water features, and more to explore. There is something for everyone, no matter the activity level and experience with the outdoors. With the Jackson County Tourism’s Orb Project, there is even a reward for simply enjoying the outdoors. Hidden in various public locations around Jackson County are beautiful glass orbs blown locally by April Lemon of More than Lemons in Holton. With orb drops happening twice a year all over Jackson County, there is beauty to be found beyond what Mother Nature provides. There are orbs hidden on the various trails, including horse trails, at various parks, and anywhere the public can enjoy the outdoors. By simply spending time in public spaces, there is a chance of finding a glass orb you can keep! The Tourism Council only asks that they be registered when found, with instructions on the orbs, and if you find more than one, you hide them so others can share in the joy of the hunt! You never know when your evening stroll, hiking trail time, or any outdoor adventure will reward you with an incredible, one-of-a-kind art piece.
